A Clean Beach is a happy Beach
On Friday 3 March 2023 at 7:45am the Ornus community came together with the organization of Milk on the Beach to do a beach clean up as part of our effort to raise awareness for World Wildlife Day.
We started off with a much needed cup of coffee and after some introductions and handing out bags and gloves we set out on Onrus beach to clean. At first glance the beach looked very clean, however with everyone’s help spreading up into teams to cover all areas of the beach the outcome was totally different, with a total of 8 bags filled with garbage. Most of which was filled with small bits of plastic and cigarette buds, all small items that are easily mistaken by the indigenous bird and wildlife as edible items.
Projects like these make an incredible difference as these small plastics, cigarette buds, bags, etc can cause serious to life threatening harm to the wildlife in our estuary and beach and as much as we love all the people who frequent the beach on our doorstep, we would like to keep seeing and enjoying the birds, sea otters and terrapins on the deck, estuary and beach. However we couldn’t have done it alone and thus ended the clean up by treating our local community members to a waffle to say thank you Onrus.
We hope to do this again soon and to see more people join us to help keep Onrus clean.
